Is Miakoya kimono rental trans friendly?

Help, please.

We are just days away from the kimono rental and tea ceremony that I booked a while ago at Miakoya in Kyoto. One of my kids recently came out trans, AMAB but wants a feminine kimono styling. Does anyone here know if Miakoya is cooperative with trans folks?

If not can you give suggestions for walk in locations either in Osaka, Kyoto, or Tokyo. We still have a few days that could work if we arrange things quickly.

Thank you!

  2. I am a kimono wearer and have a kimono teaching license.

I cannot find the shop you are talking about. Do you mean Miyakoya?

I would just strongly recommend calling the shop beforehand and asking if they can accommodate. The dressing spaces tend to be gender segregated and everyone is in one big room together. Because of that they wouldn’t allow someone they perceive to be biologically male into the area. Unfortunately being transgender isn’t so widely understood or resoected here.
All the kimono, makeup etc will be stored in those spaces too so it depends if the shop is willing to take from one to the other. In some cases it might be in a different branch of the shop altogether.

I did a quick Google in Japanese and found some people recommending this shop as being accommodating

But again I would submit an enquiry beforehand to check they can accommodate you on the day.

  3. I’m not too sure but I would send an email to ask if you’re comfortable doing that. I think if they are open to tourists and market to them- they could be! I think Asakusa Kimono Rental in Tokyo should be a good place!! I went a couple of years ago, and while I am cis, I found them to be a super kind group of people who are open. I went to a different kimono rental space in Kyoto and I wouldn’t say the same for them
