Ideas for cool stuff to do in Himeji

Me and my Mrs are thinking about having a trip to Himeji. We’re not interested in the castle but we’re interested in shyoutengai, nice food, beautiful gardens, record shops. And we’re looking for slightly mysterious experiences. If you know about Himeji please share your secret knowledge.

  1. Hubby and I moved to Himeji from Kobe 2 years ago and honestly there’s not much to do besides eat lol.

Here’s some of our fav local places.

    – ラーメンそうそう
    – とんかつ朔
    – おとと
    – ウブリアーコ
    – Spice Suehiro
    – Mother Moon
    – Piece By Piece Coffee
    – Coboto Bakery
    – Bakery Lamp
    – 253icecream (highly recommend! very creative flavours & quite light – love the ぶどうjasmine tea)

  2. Honestly check out the castle if you haven’t been before. Otherwise there really isn’t much else. And it is a really nice castle.

  3. I used to live there, but it was a long time ago so my knowledge of the restaurants is out of date.

There are two shoutengai arcades that run parallel to each other from the station to the castle which are pretty decent and good for browsing and eating. There are some record shops in there, on Miyuki Dori, just Google “Himeji Records” and you’ll find them (can’t say if they are good or not….)

There is a nice garden, Kokoen, next to the castle which is worth a look if you like gardens.

The temple complex on Mount Shosha is quite impressive too, though its a bit far from the city centre and you’ll have to take a bus. I’d recommend it, but only if you have time for an excursion.
