I just moved to Japan and I’m in the process of applying for SoftBank Hikari. I heard that SoftBank requires renting a BBユニット to use IPv6. Is there any way to use IPv6 IPoE + IPv4 without the BBユニット? I’ve noticed that the performance of the BBユニット is quite poor, so I’m planning to replace it with my own x86 OpenWRT router.

After a lot of messing I have DS-Lite working on OpenWRT on my Netgear 7800 router (not Softbank though). There’s not a huge difference in max download speed over IPv4 but it is more consistent, particularly in the evenings, and upload speed is faster.

Try setting your openwrt for v6plus
If you haven’t install it, then change it, it’s a big trouble to use with your own router with Softbank IPoE. Even those famous local brands like Buffalo doesn’t support their IPoE directly.
