I want to find more insects, mushrooms, and edible plants (and helping researchers is a plus), but iNaturalist doesn’t seem so populated in my area (Iwate prefecture, near Morioka).
Are there more popular apps for these things here?
I’m also using a Yama-Kei pocket field guide and can’t wait to find more of them at Book-Off…any other field guide recommendations?

There are plenty of field guides in Japanese at book stores. If you’re looking for guides in English it’s gonna be difficult to come by. I am currently in the process of making a Japanese mushroom field guide in English, that I will eventually sell, but it’s gonna take me a while to translate it all.
