Registering Address When Moving to a New Ward in 3 Days

Hello, I recently moved to Tokyo and am aware of the requirement to register my address within 14 days. However, my move in date for my permanent address won’t be until Monday. Sunday is the final day for the 14 day requirement.

My question is, will anyone actually care if I register 15 days after the “2 week deadline”? Or do I really need to go register a temporary address for the weekend to be within 14 days and immediately change it Monday?

It seems silly but I don’t want immigration sniffing my way and I’d rather not get any fines

  1. Just pick a date a week or so in the future when you deregister at your old ward. Then you have 14 days from that date to register at the new place. Nobody cares when you actually moved.

  2. You could technically go register it now. They don’t ask for any proof that you currently live at the address you register.

  3. You will be fine, especially since day 14 is a Sunday. Just go on Monday and explain that you were in a hotel or other temporary lodging until now. We were here for 4 weeks before we had a permanent address to register, and the main thing was just being able to explain where we had been / why we weren’t registered, which in our case was because we were in a hotel and Airbnb while house hunting.
