I’m tryna find a thift store that isnt grossly expensive “vintage” or “import” or “branded” clothes, literally just cheap used clothes, within the West Central Tokyo area. And not Mode-off because half of them have closed down 💀
The entire concept of giving used stuff to charities who then run thrift shops doesn’t really exist in Japan. Not on any sort of scale, anyway. So most of the clothes you find in used shops here are imported. Once you start down that rabbit hole, things get expensive.
2nd Street?
I don’t live in Tokyo, but do you not have stores like Manga Souko, From B, Second Street in Tokyo?
Try mercari. I usually try things out at Uniqlo and gu,Then try to find those items on mercari in new unused condition.
King family? And 2nd street has good quality clothes but a bit pricier. Just don’t bother looking at pick up they sell 2nd hand good at brand new prices.
We live in Kanagawa and love Wattomans/Wattmans.
The Salvation Army has two shops in Tokyo, one in Suginami (2 Chome-21-1 Wada, Suginami City, Tokyo 166-0012), and the other in Sumida Ward (〒130-0012 Tokyo, Sumida City, Taihei, 4 Chome−11−3 コーポ・シャローム 1F). They’re both only open on Saturday mornings, but the Suginami one always has a lot of clothing.
The Book Off Super Bazaar near Odakyu/Keio Nagayama Stations (6 Chome-29 Nagayama, Tama, Tokyo 206-0025) has two large floors devoted to clothing and is usually inexpensive. (It so happens that I got three shirts I like there just this past Wednesday for a total of ¥7xx yen, including tax.) The Book Off near Isehara Station (Odakyu Line) (3 Chome-5-1 Isehara, Kanagawa 259-1131) also has a lot of clothing. (The Iseahara area also has a used clothing wholesale place, but it has a minimum purchase of ¥5000; I have not been there, but have a high-school aged relative who goes with friends to make pooled-money purchases.)
Finally, keep an eye on [fmfm.jp](https://fmfm.jp), which is a flea market site: flea markets run by Mottainai Japan (especially indoor ones) often have extremely cheap clothing.
They exist but a lot of them are in more downmarket shotengai and are little mom and pop places, not chains. I’m nowhere near your area but google maps 古着 and see what comes up near you.
Tanpopo house is the cheapest I’ve seen, and it’s decent clothes. They’re super cheap and a chain, so you should be able to find them pretty much everywhere.
treasure factory, book off, second street. Where is your west central tokyo anyway? I was at Machida Book Off super bazaar yesterday, there is branded designer clothes on 4th floor but on 5th floor there is 300yen shirts corners. If you fancy fancy clothing: Komehyo sells everything from balenciaga to rolex
I think you’re looking for Treasure Factory. It felt like a value village to me when I went. Also 100% agree thrifting here sucks, is everyone just made of money??
Tanpopo House in Koenji! They have a ¥105 section and the clothing prices are typically under ¥1000. The nicer pieces are more expensive, but reasonable as hell. I got a leather jacket for ¥4000 there.
There’s this Don Don Down Wednesday in Adachi-ku.. you might need a car to get there, but it’s worth it.
Any of the chain ones. BOOK OFF plus, BOOK OFF super bazaar, second street, mode off, some hard offs also have clothes, treasure factory, etc.
You don’t want to spend 4000 yen on some used Walmart jeans and flannels?
