Resubmitting this with a better title in accordance with mods. and now to the proper location!

Sorry I’ve been all over the place!Hello Everyone, Sorry for the bother, didn’t know if it was appropriate to post this here but I’ve been freaking out for the last six hours and am trying everything out of desperation. Every other Japan sub auto-removed my post so I’m just hoping someone out there sees this and can maybe help.

My father (66YO Male) is visiting Japan for the first time with my mom to come to my wedding (I live in Hyogo), however, he stepped outside their hotel to buy something at the convenience store by himself, and hasn’t returned. We fear he is lost, injured, or worse. He does not speak Japanese, and he left his phone and passport in the hotel room, just his wallet and his hotel room key. Yes, I know he is a dumbass, I awoke to my mom crying after waiting for two hours for him to come back. They have a happy marriage so it isn’t that. We also called the nearby convenience stores and one of them remembered him coming in, but he couldn’t understand what my dad was asking for.

We have filled a missing person report, and are anxiously awaiting for him to come back or for the police to find him. He is older and his mind isn’t as sharp as it used to be, so we are really worried about him. He was last seen near the Keikyuu EX Inn near the Haneda airport (address below).

He is a tall (6’4) white man with tanned skin, gray hair and glasses, wearing a blue polo and black sweatpants.

His name is Greg, and if you see him, please tell him Sean is looking for him and DM me for the phone number. That said, any information would be so incredibly useful and helpful, I’m flying out as soon as I can to go look for him. Please, I’m so worried about him.

  1. Okay #1, relax a 6’4″ guy in OTA-KU isn’t going to be in any physical danger. The most likely reason he’s missing is he took a wrong turn and hasn’t found anyone who’s English is good enough to help him find the hotel.

If he was picked up for walking while white they’d have come to the hotel and checked his passport and given him a warning.

The one exception I can think of is if he normally carries a pocket knife ask your mom to check if he might have brought that with him. But again seems unlikely since as an old sketchy looking white guy I’ve yet to be bothered by the cops. Him turning up once he finds someone to ask directions from (and hopefully he remembers that the hotel key should have it’s name on it) is by far the most likely outcome.

  2. Hope you hear good news soon. Has the hotel been helpful in any way to contact local authorities, or perhaps any EN speaking staff to be present for your Mom?

  3. >Left phone and passport at the hotel

It’s possible he has been immigration checked by police and detained due to inability to prove his immigration status.

Police have the ability to work with the person they are immigration checking I.e take them to the place of where they are staying to check resident card, and/or for non-mid to long term residents, such as your dad, their passport, but that is totally at the police discretion.

So combine that with the possibility that your dad maybe does not even know the name of the hotel he is staying at…..

Basically what I’m suggesting is make sure you contact the embassy right now of the country he holds citizenship in (you may have already done that, but not mentioned in your Reddit post). And also contact local police because this is not like being arrested for drug charges etc, if they have him detained due to unable to prove his identity/immigration status then it’s probably just a simple case of rocking up to the station showing them his passport and then maybe paying the up to ¥200,000 fine.

  4. (If you have an account) Have you posted this on twitter? The community is HUGE over there

  5. Good on you for being pro – active and notifying the police. I hope he returns safely soon. I know six hours must feel like an eternity but for an adult, it could just be that they got lost and will eventually find their way back.

  6. Heat stroke is a concern in this weather, asking the authorities if any undocumented foreigners have been taken to hospital may be a reasonable step, after speaking to the police.

  7. praying for the best. Also you should reach out to haneda airport staff in case they have special network of helping lost foreigners

  8. I have class in a bit, but I’ll look around and spread the word. Let us know if something changes OP

  9. It looks like the nearest convenience store to the hotel is Family Mart on Hwy 311 heading west. Have you tried to contact other businesses there? There’s a gas/petrol station, rental car agency, shrine, MyStays Hotel in the area. It is concerning that there is a river and bridge right next door to the hotel in the opposite direction.

  10. Hope he is found safe and soon, you seem to be doing all the things to make that happen.

  11. I couldn’t find it in the original post- could you update as to what time he left the hotel?

  12. Another possibility – Since there are many other hotels nearby, could he have gone to one of them after getting lost?

Probably sitting in the lobby somewhere, and I’m guessing he doesn’t even know the name of his own hotel so the staff can’t really help him.

  13. Sorry you are going through this! Did you post In The Tokyo expat network group on Fb?

  14. In the Haneda area now so I’ll keep an eye out. Hope you all reunite with him soon!

  15. I live near Haneda and neet to go out for groceries soon, so I’ll take a detour drive around the river to see if I can find anything.
