Itinerary Check | Advice and recommendations for 28 days in Japan

Hello, we are two people traveling to Japan from the US in the fall for about 28 days. We’re in the early phases of itinerary planning but would like some input what seems doable or overly ambitious. I’m not great with trains/travel planning so I’ll be relying on my partner and I’m already getting a bit nervous about timing everything out so, again, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

**Day 1-7: Tokyo**
\- Arrive in Tokyo
\- 3 nights at Tokyo Disney
\- 4 nights in Tokyo Shinjuku

**Day 8 – Nikko – Is this doable or should we just stay in the city center?**
\- Travel from Tokyo to Nikko, leave bags in coin lockers
\- Explore shrines, temples, waterfalls during the day
\- Retrieve bags, somehow get to Kinugawa Onsen to stay overnight

**Day 9 – Taksaki**
\- travel from Nikko to Takasaki
\- Activities TBD
\- Stay overnight

**Day 10-11 – Nagano**
\- travel from Takasaki to Nagano
\- Activities TBD
\- 2 night stay

**Day 12-13 – Kanazawa**
\- travel from Nagano to Kanazawa
\- Activities TBD
\- 2 night stay

**Day 14 – Hiroshima**
\- travel from Kanazawa to Hiroshima
\- Activities TBD
\- stay overnight

**Day 15-16 – Fakuoka**
\- travel from Hiroshima to Fakuoka
\- Activities TBD
\- 2 night stay

**Day 17 – Himeji**
\- travel from Hiroshima to Himeji
\- Activities TBD
\- stay overnight

**Day 18-23 – Osaka/Kyoto**
\- travel from Himeji to Osaka
\- Osaka food tour
\- Danjiri Festival
\- day trip(s) to Kyoto
\- day trip to Kobe
\- more activities TBD
\- 5 night stay

**Day 24-25 – Takayama**
\- travel from Osaka to Takayama
\- Activities TBD
\- 2 night stay

**Day 26-27 – Hakone**
\- travel from Takayama to Hakone
\- Mt. Fuji related activities (not hiking the mountain though)
\- other activities TBD
\- 2 night stay at Ryokan

**Day 28 – Leave Japan**
\- Travel from Hakone to Tokyo
\- Flight to US

Also, it would be a huge bonus if anyone has any tips/recommendations for the following:
\- Sumo events
\- where to buy great chef knives and ship back to US (assuming they can’t go on the carry-on back)
\- Whiskey distillery, sake distillery, beer breweries

  1. I would suggest Nagano -> Matsumoto -> Takayama -> Shirakawago -> Kanazawa as a more efficient route, with Matsumoto and Shirakawago being 2~4 hour stopovers. Otherwise seems pretty good. Takayama just seems like a big detour and not at all on the way to Hakone from Osaka.

Kappabashi in Tokyo is probably the most straightforward place to find knives.
