Tips for learning Japanese for someone who struggles with self-study?

Hey all! Sorry in advance if this isn’t a good place to post this.

Just as the title says, I’ve always had a strong interest in learning Japanese, but struggle with the self-study methods that accompany it. I do best with instructors or in classroom settings with other learners, but when I took a course while I was enrolled in my local community college, I eventually lost interest because the level I got to during the year of self study I had before enrolling was above that of my classmates, so most of the course seemed like one big review to me! I also considered (and am still considering) using services like GoGoNihon to enroll in a language school, but that isn’t financially possible for some years.

Anyone have any tips, advice, or guidance of how to keep self-study engaging or maybe mention some avenues I haven’t pursued yet? I’m in the military now and I’d like to pursue this again while I’m here!

  1. It looks like you’re asking about how to start learning Japanese. r/LearnJapanese has compiled a [Starter’s Guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/wiki/index/startersguide) to help with this. Good luck!
