Is it worth applying for PR ?

Hi, I have been Japan for 8 years now working full time job. but planning to go to Australia for higher studies and planning to settle there…. But I feel it would be an advantage to have to PR in Japan incase I want to return again ( ori might regret some day)…Do you think it’s possible to have PR here and live in another country ? Would I still have to pay taxes in Japan even if I don’t live here ? Love to hear the pros and Cons please… Thanks alot

  1. You have to come back at least once a year or the PR is cancelled according to a friend who had a PR but moved back to Australia. Perhaps they changed the rules or he was mistake. This can be double checked easily. But your PR will expire at some date so take this into account.

  2. I would check if you need to maintain an address for residence. Do you have family here so you can keep your address registered?

  3. Keep in mind that processing PR application takes around 6-9 months nowadays (depending on the city you live in).

Also if you’re here on a working visa, you need to qualify for the high-skill route (points-based), otherwise you’re 2 years shy of the continuous living requirement.

  4. Related question: as if this week I am officially on year 9 of ten for applying for PR. Do I need to wait until my application is dated ten years from my first arrival, or can I apply beforehand at all?

  5. There’s a lot of paperwork involved, but if you have a day or two free you can get it sorted.

Took mine about 6 months and am on the train right now to pick it up
