Definitely not. At least not in North America. The quality is supermarket quality.
I recently ate at Kura Sushi in Japan for the first time (though I have eaten at Kura in the US). I was blown away by how cheap everything was versus the quality and variety of sushi. All plates were between 100-200 yen. To give you an idea of dollar cost, $1 currently converts to 140 yen.
As someone who loves to try everything once, this was a great way to try less common cuts like whelk that I don’t tend to see available in KY (with the exception of high end restaurants of course).
Didn’t realize sushi was so much cheaper in Japan. Is that universally true or just at this restaurant?
Sushi in the US can be pretty expensive depending on where you go there are things to factor in like labor, rents, logistics etc which are passed on to the consumer.
Everything is cheaper in Japan even the model trains ask me how I know lol.
Eating Kura in America can get expensive lol it adds up fast. Kura in Japan…super super cheap. It will be even a challenge to rack up the bill.
Kura US has expanded rapidly and is slinging overpriced meh sushi as a novelty. I really considered investing in the early pandemic due to consideration of low-staffing benefits.
I’m convinced they went too big too fast, their mid product will not mesh well at the price points they are offering stateside, and expect the 2 within 15 miles of me to be closed before their initial leases conclude.
On the inverse, I percieve that the copycat handroll spots done in the semi-upscale fashion of Nami Nori will do much better despite the percieved higher price.
The questions in America that decide Kura’s future are how much do people want to pay for slightly better than grocery store sushi for lunch, and can they compete with the sub-$30 AYCE spots, let alone decent spots that are available most everywhere.
I’m sure Kura gets a lot of hate but I’m with you on this. We have one close by and for a long time I went to Kura every Saturday. It’s the only place I can ever imagine finding bluefin toro for $3.50 a piece. I go, get my toro fix and move on. It’s not amazing quality but it’s enjoyable and when I need a sushi fix, this is my go to.
