  1. held for 40 days because of the same surname…wtf. and the cops gave a fake apology after, real nice

  2. Wtf because he had the same surname? In a country where most of the people have shared surnames? Scary shit man

  3. There’s definitely more to the story than this. The Japanese police are sometimes idiotic and inept but they don’t arrest people purely because of a surname.

One possibility is that this is an ex-boyfriend of the girl who has been stalking and harassing her. Then a social media account with his surname in it threatens her with uploading revenge porn. Police arrest the guy but later on his lawyers show that someone else owns the account (possibly a friend of his). Police are pissed and still want to prosecute him because they know he’s the one behind it but have to give an ‘apology’.

Pure conjecture, but I’ve actually known similar cases in Japan play out like this, where the friends of stalkers back them up, provide fake alibis, etc.

  4. I have a friend with the most common first and last name and no middle name. She says it’s never been an issue.

  5. I wonder whether or not they asked the victim to ID his mugshot. Surely that would have cleared that little misunderstanding right up within a day.

The article doesn’t mention whether the actual sex fiend was subsequently nabbed, or if he’s still at large.

  6. Here we go again. To all intents and purposes Japan is effectively a police state. If you don’t have any evidence, either charge people or let them go! FFS.

  7. 40 days x 200,000 yen per day minimum compensation for this guy
Amazing he didn’t crack and confess to the Abe murder under duress
