i would like to ask some questions about it cuz i cant call the office for some reason.

1. are you obligated to pay this pension?
2. can you get the money back when you decided to move back to your country?

  1. 1. Everyone over 18 has to sign up for the national pension. Failure to pay has started being evaluated as a criteria for visa renewal.

    2. You can claim back a certain number of years of contribution (IIRC 3) if you meet certain criteria. Google Japan pension refund.

  2. 1. Yes, unless you qualify for reductions or exemptions (for example, due to being a student or being unemployed for a certain amount of time. If this applied to you, ***you*** *must apply for these exemptions*).
    2. You can get back up the last 5 years of contributions *if you leave Japan* and apply for the large lump withdrawal within 2 years of leaving (80% of your contributions). You will need to assign a tax rep in Japan that can forward the remaining 20% to your foreign bank account.
