Sighs
I’ll step up to claim them.
It’s not much but it’s honest work
When it comes to real estate, inheritances are often not claimed due to outstanding obligations such as taxes and deferred maintenance expenses.
New form of Japanese lottery?
Japan has to rewrite the inheritance tax law. Increase the threshold that people have to start paying on to at least 100,000,000 yen.
Additionally, tax should be super low (less than a home) on cleared and maintained (think just sand/gravel), but undeveloped lots of land to avoid infested rotten homes sitting on plots to lower land tax. These plots of land should have zero tax if the owner/inheritor maintains a green space (think park) that could be used by the public. That way they get a “tax free” investment in exchange for a bit of gardening and beauty. Could make for a good startup of small gardening companies for those who live away from their inherited land. I’d love to see neighborhoods with little forests and gardens rather than dilapidated buildings filled with trash surrounded by the normal grey Japanese neighborhood scenery of concrete and asphalt.
Don’t worry the Japanese government will claim them.
