I saw this from quite a distance when I was driving by yesterday. The column of spray was high enough to see from maybe 8km away.
Arsenic and Hydrogen Sulfide are not uncommon in volcanic steam geysers. The eruption was so intense as to spread those noxious chemicals a fair distance, so some folks being sickened is not too surprising.
