It would be great to hear from anyone who has used a portable air conditioner about how effective they are. With the summer heat ramping up, I’m looking for an AC unit for my bedroom and am debating between getting a wall-mounted split unit or a smaller portable one. For context, the bedroom is about 5.5 tatami and is at the front of the apartment which means that if I were to get a wall-mounted unit, the fan would have to be placed by the front door of the apartment, which is a bit of an eyesore.
Any thoughts or suggestions on what kind of unit to get would be appreciated, as would anyone sharing experience with a portable AC unit.

I had a portable AC unit and it was a waste of money, unless I was right next to it. It was just as an eyesore and ate up a lot of energy. I’ve heard YMMV, but I personally can’t recommend them.
I’d suggest getting a window unit or the wall unit if you can.
Had [this one](https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/gp/aw/d/B0925P4Y29?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title) before. Not worth it. Too loud, consumes way more energy, and takes up space in the room. Used it only for 1 summer then sold it
I got one for my daughters room. I was pretty skeptical but it actually works really well. Her room used to get really really hot in summer and it’s a little noisy but no more than a fan.
This is the one we got:

See if your local home center has a demonstration “room” with one. The one near me made one with a clear vinyl sheet to trap the cool air and an exhaust port for the hot air to flow out of. It seemed to work well.
But get one with an exhaust tubing that is directed out of the window otherwise the heat will just stay in your room. (like the one linked by level [Nekomata1223](https://www.reddit.com/user/Nekomata1223/))
I would avoid. Takes up space when being used; takes up storage space when not. Then a pain to dispose of when you realise it’s rubbish.
