Police check in Tokyo without a request from a public authority in another country?

I’m planning to leave Japan later this year and a few online guides (and a friend who left last year) recommended I apply for a police check / criminal record check (渡航証明/犯罪経歴証明書) before I leave in case I need it for jobs I apply to once I’m in the UK.

It seems like this certificate is easy to receive in other prefectures. However, from the [Metropolitan Police Dept. website](https://www.keishicho.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/multilingual/english/finding_services/applications/criminal_record.html) it seems like, for people currently living in Tokyo, you can only apply for it if you have “A document that confirms your necessity of the certificate; for example, a letter from the authority stating the requirement to submit it”.

So my question is:
Do you know anyone who successfully received a criminal record check / police check in Tokyo before leaving Japan? And if so, what “evidence” did they provide?

I know it takes months and a lot of money to process if you apply once you leave Japan, so I was hoping to get it done before we leave if possible.

I searched Reddit for this topic but couldn’t find a post tackling with this specific issue (Ie in Tokyo). Thank you I’m advance.

  1. Japanese police do not provide criminal background checks at the request of individuals or corporations. You can get one if you need it for a visa or some other government requirement, with a request from the embassy.
