Can you convert a student visa to a temporary visitor visa and what’s the best office in Tokyo to it at?

Student living in Tokyo. I’ll soon be going back but I wanted to give myself a little breathing room near the tail end of the journey. The temporary visitor visa looks like it’s perfect for this, but I can’t find any clear information on whether you can transition to it from a student visa.

Last time I was at the main Immigration Office in Shinagawa they didn’t bring it up when I asked about visa options, either. They were not terribly helpful, however. Is it actually possible? If so, how fast are you able to get one and what do you need if you’re a student?

I’d go to immigration myself to check right away, but I think all the immigration offices in Tokyo are closed today.
