Meta Thread: Changes feedback!

Happy Weekend everyone!

As some of you have notices, we have implemented a weekly thread. Every day of the week a new topic is pinned for people to discuss and respond to. How’d you like it? What did you think of the topics? Let us know what we can do to improve them!

Also, by popular demand, we are working on a revamp of the Starter’s Guide that we hope to launch very soon. We will also be working on updating the rules to reflect our new sub style.

Thank you everyone for bearing with us while we try some new stuff!

  1. I think the sub is moving in a positive direction, at least.

I like the idea of approving recognized “quality contributors” for making top-level posts. I like the idea of trying to keep things organized in various threads.

I might be biased here, but I think that certain things like self-promotion or “victories” being limited to one day a week is also a net positive (I really don’t think that sort of thing needs to be posted prominently every day.)

If you need any feedback for the Starter’s Guide, I’d be happy to help out in whatever way needed.

If you’re updating the rules, one thing that I’ve felt for a while is that there should be a hard ban on ChatGPT and Duolingo posts, as a consensus has been reached on both these topics and there really is no new ground to cover.

(That said, this hasn’t been a problem since the re-opening/re-framing of the sub, so…just looking at that sense maybe it’s been a huge success?)

  2. I liked the daily topics addition.

Give it a couple more weeks trial while everyone gets used to the concept, I think it will help make the board users feel a little less confined.

I think it’s a happy medium as the mods work through the reddit changes and what that means.

  3. This is basically the /r/fitness approach to moderation. Personally it killed the subreddit for me because top-level posts that the community decides to upvote tend to (but not always) be interesting reads that garner unique discussion. I acknowledge that it’s easier to moderate, but quite frankly this isn’t that large of a subreddit, even though pre-protest I regularly saw it take most of the day for moderators here to remove posts that the community downvoted to oblivion within an hour or two.

I was all for only having a daily thread if the moderators wanted to continue some form of protest, but if you want to “open” things back up again, I’d rather it be how it was before with better moderation than this tightly controlled solution you’ve come up with.

  4. **Like**

    * Less spam on main page

    * Daily thread getting used for all questions

    * Sub seems extremely well organized

    * There’s a thread for self-promotion, which actually seems to simultaneously invite more people to do it, while keeping it in one place, while also keeping it away from the core of questions/answers, which are all good qualities

    * Categorized threads invite more participation

    * I’m curious about the “quality posters only can post” idea and I want to see it in action a bit. I’m gonna put it in the “I like it” section for now

    **Don’t Like**

    * Seems at least some posters are really confused, “why can’t I post” etc. But new people to any sub seem confused of it’s conventions if it has any special ones.

    * Search does not seem to work great with the current “megathread” type approach. Though search only coming back with “quality posters” threads is interesting.
