Budget friendly food deals

Hello, can you share some budget friendly food deals you have found in Japan? Can be breakfast/snack/lunch/dinner, doesn’t matter. I find food in Japan generally quite affordable, but it’s always good to save some money (especially as a student)

So far I have found those:
– Daiso Melonpans (snack/breakfast) – for ¥100 (+tax) you get 2 melonpans. They are not the best melonpans in the world, but they are still pretty good. The downside is that they don’t have them in every store.
– Matsuya Beef bowl (lunch/dinner) – for ¥400 you can get a regular size bowl + miso soup.
– Marugame Seimen (lunch/dinner) – haven’t tried this one yet, but it should be a very affordable udon chain.
– Tap water is drinkable and there are many water fountains around (you can use the app mymizu to find them), so if you don’t mind drinking water, you can just easily refill almost everywhere. Also water in restaurants is free.

Lunch is sometimes cheaper than dinner, so it is not a bad idea to go for a lunch to restaurant and get something smaller for dinner. Also konbinis and vending machines are usually more expensive than supermarkets.

  1. Chain restaurants in general:

    – Sukiya for breakfast (Tamago kake gohan) or Gyudon
    – Tenya for cheap Tempura (Dons)
    – Ootoya is a bit more fancy but still very affordable, not super cheap though. It‘s one of my favorites for Katsu, Rice with mackarel or veggies
    – Saizeriya for cheap Japanese-Italian food

Also if you go to supermarkets or department stores in the afternoon after 6pm you can make some bargains because sometimes you can buy premade food like Bentos, Sushi, Katsu, Chirashi eg for half the price.
