Joss’s Café and Sushi Bar – Annapolis, MD

Wow. Best sushi I’ve ever had. $80 before tip (I know it was pricey, but worth it).

In order from left to right top row then bottom:

Ikura (Salmon Roe, Fish Eggs)
Uni (Sea Urchin)
Flying Fish Roe (Fish Eggs)
Hotate Gai (Raw Scallop)
Ika (Squid)
Saba (Pickeled Mackerel)
Rockfish
Toro (Fatty Tuna)

Also had Miso Soup and Seaweed Salad.

A lot of these were new for me, hence the exorbitant selection. I have had Ikura and Uni before a few times, and Ika only once.

The Saba and Rockfish I was not a fan of. The Saba tasted like old stinky fish and the Rockfish tasted like dirt.

The Toro was amazing. I see why people rant and rave about it. It may be my new favorite (previously salmon). The Hotate Gai was also surprisingly delicious although I’m sure part of that was thanks to the eel sauce they put on it.

This was my first time trying Ika in Nigiri form. Previously I had it in thin strips. In this form it was weirdly tough yet soft, in a good way.

Their Ikura was good quality. I couldn’t tell if it was any better or worse than what I’ve had.

I was not a fan of this Uni. I wonder if it wasn’t the freshest catch anymore or if it was just different in some way. I know Uni is fickle but I haven’t had enough to tell. The 4 times I’ve had it, 2 of the times it’s been meh and the other two I wanted to devour a tray of it.

Very very good restaurant. I suggest you try it if you’re in the area.

  1. My God does this look good to me right now… I’m 36 weeks pregnant and have been craving nothing more than basically exactly what’s pictured.

  2. So, if you want to try something different, get salmon roe with quail egg. On the rice wrapped in seaweed like you have there. It’s so good together

Me thinking “Wow, that was only $80!!!”

  4. I went there probably 15 years ago and wasn’t that impressed. Time seems to have done well for them 🙂

I’ll go back next time I’m in town because of your post!
