Keratin treatment or straight perm for frizzy, fine hair?

Hi! Looking for advice… I have frizzy hair with lots of flyaways. The strands of my hair are thin, but I have a lot of hair, so it’s not that my hair is thin/flat. I also have problems with my roots and bangs getting oily. I’m wondering which would be better to get rid of frizz and flyaways with this kind of hair, keratin treatment or straight perm (or, any other suggestions would be appreciated!)? I also have a wave to my hair which I rather like, but I’d be willing to part with it to get rid of the frizz.

Also, if anyone has recommendations for places in Tokyo, that would be great. I can also ask r/tokyo once I figure out what treatment is better. (I’m mixed white anglo saxon & boricua fwiw)

  1. You are describing my hair exactly. Also wondering about damage. I heard these treatments really damage your hair?

  2. Don’t do it. Your hair will be so flat from the root you will hate it, it’s won’t have the body you are used to if you have frizzy hair currently. You will be counting down the days until it grows out. It also looks lifeless and has no character.

You are really better off to straighten it with a hairdryer or iron. Instead I flatten the flyaways with lots of hairspray , works pretty well for me, and then I keep it curly and don’t apply heat.

If you have thin strands it will snap.

Speaking from personal experience. Don’t do it. It’s only good for people with currently straight hair wanting it to be arraigned (why lol) or African type curl or coil as it cuts down on the straightening time significantly so would still be worth it I guess.

  3. I’m mixed too, I have fine hair with similar texture. I looooooveee having my straight perms! Its so much easier. If Japanese itsnt an issue for you I recommend my salon Enore! They are an award winning salon for straight perms and they are so professional and lovely!

Those talking about damage. My hair feels and looks so healthy ans shiny. Its amazing

  4. Have you tried gel casting? Honestly changed my life, leave the gel cast in during the sweaty or humid commute, break it when you arrive and have beautiful hair all day (until you go outside again). Lots of Youtube tutorials about how to do it!

  5. Wouldn’t do straight perm. Damaging, makes your hair flat and drab, and it looks really weird growing out

Keratin may work for you. Some of my keratin treatments worked pretty well for managing my frizz. I didn’t get the treatment done in Japan, though, so i honestly don’t how well it’ll handle the extreme humidity here

  6. My hair texture is similar to yours, naturally straight with a slight wave and lots of flyaways. I have tried a few variations of ストレートパーマ and 縮毛矯正 (which I’ve read is stronger for if you have more curly hair/not naturally straight?). I just got 1 for a third time (spread out over a year and a half) and I’m not really impressed with the results so I think I’m giving up. 🫤

Even before coming to Japan, before I ever even dyed (highlights) my hair before I’ve always had a tendency to get frizz or flyaways. Tried a straight perm and while it does make my hair get less tangled, it does leave my hair a little too thin looking while the flyaways tend to stay. I don’t think my hair was that damaged before since I tend not to use heat on it, but I feel like I definitely need to blow dry my hair after every shower now instead of air drying for my hair to look decent. People recommend blow drying to prevent wet hair from breaking anyway, but I never saw a reduction in damage or frizz personally.

Anyway, I’d say try a straight perm once to see if it helps tame the frizz. It sounds like your hair wouldn’t have an awkward grow out stage if it’s relatively straight already. They don’t recommend it for damaged or bleached hair so they’ll always consult with you about your hair’s condition. They always apply conditioning treatments so my hair never felt super dry or had crazy breakage, but obviously the chemicals can’t be healthy for your hair. Lol
