Affordable Ballroom Dance Clothes? (社交ダンス)

Looking for formal-ish, but still breathable and light clothes to practice in.

I’m definitely not going to pay 3man for a pair of Latin pants. I’ve read that golf pants can work well, but those tend to be pricey too.

Places like UNIQLO and GU have options, sure – but they just seem to fall a bit short of my expectations.

Should I simply expect to pay a premium for “proper” dance clothes? Curious about anyone’s experience with using “good enough” clothes, maybe a specific brand.

Thanks!

  1. Most golf shops are now having sales on their summer clothing. Why don’t you take a look at a place like Golf 5?

  2. Workman has some “business” style clothes, I really like everything ice gotten there and they are quite affordable so I recommend taking a look

  3. I used to dance ballroom. Almost all the dancers wore clothes from proper dancewear brands, even for practice clothes. There was a local dance shop where people bought their practice gear (and competition gear too, since they had everything).

The exception was the university dance circle kids, who wore sweatpants/tshirts a lot do the time. Some of them did buy cheaper dancewear online, especially for the women looking for simple practice skirts.

See if there’s a dance shop in your area, they may have sales on last season clothes.

  4. Former dancer here. If you can, I think you should try to invest in designated dance wear. The materials are different. Breathable, stretchy in all the right places, form fitting, can hold up heavy use etc.

I don’t think you need to pay a premium. You can probably find something cheaper at a dance store or online if you kept your eye out. If you need to get something temporary that isn’t dance wear go for it. Just make sure it’s lightweight and allows for good amounts of stretching/movement, but is tight enough that it isn’t loose and accentuates your legs for correct posture correction, and just keep your eye out for something affordable down the line.
