Article title is more clear than this title. I immediately thought. Wow June 2020 had 2 million visitors?
Japanese pop culture enjoyed a significant boost in popularity during the height of the pandemic with lockdowns
Before the pandemic, in 2019, there was a “boycott Japan” movement in South Korea but it eventually ended when the “Demon Slayer” anime movie was successful at the Korean box office
More Japanese anime movies would dominate box offices overseas like “Slam Dunk” and “Suzume.”
A boost in popularity of Japanese pop culture is what encouraged many to visit Japan. That, along with a weak yen
Prices of western hotel chains have exploded in the last few months – doubled in most cases. I wonder if they ever will go down again.
So that’s why most places are trying to speak in English to me again instead of speaking Japanese like the last few years D:
Btw, I went back to Japan since 2014 thie last June and must say it changed a lot regarding this (never saw so many tourists there). Also, the behaviour of japanese people overall changed too regarding this.
Haven’t seen any Chinese tour groups though, the worst is yet to come.
The weak JPY and comparatively low increase in prices of food and accommodation in Japan make it highly desirable now for tourism, especially from the USA.
