It’s the weekly complaint thread! Time to get anything off your chest that’s been bugging you or pissing you off.

Remain civil and be nice to other commenters (even try to help).

  1. Summer break is upon me and my family. While my kids are off for about a month, I get only 3 days off from work.

  2. Been seeing lots of casual, barely disguised or even blatant disdain on Twitter and in other spaces for people that live in Japan but don’t speak Japanese (or are perceived to speak it less fluently).

The people who need to read this won’t, but: Stop. There’s no language prerequisite for being a good person, for being a benefit to the community, or even for forgoing all of that and just living your own life in peace and happiness. There are also lots of immigrants who for myriad reasons come to Japan and hit the ground running working multiple jobs and, despite doing their best to pick up Japanese, can’t fit hours of study every week at expensive language schools to learn a language that, when paired against many other languages, has an incredibly high difficulty grade. Even if a person of relative privilege comes to Japan and fails to pick it up in a few or even a dozen years, their language ability is not their worth as a person. Language acquisition can improve your quality of life and sense of belonging, but “learn the language” has been and will always be xenophobic and exclusionary rhetoric.

I could go on but enough said!

  3. I finally understand all of the complaints about doctors around here. I took off work and went to a neurologist for frequent dizziness, thinking I was scheduled for an MRI, but ended up getting a two minute field sobriety test and being told I’m fine. Total waste and very frustrating.
