How do you stay cool at night without getting a sore throat and stuffed nose form the air con?

We don’t even have it on high, 28 and very low fan. If we don’t have it on, it’s way, way too hot to sleep. We have a humidifier to keep the humidity okay in the room, but even that isn’t working. Yeah, we tried the cooling blankets but those dont work above 28-30, and we have a baby to worry about too.

What is the trick??

  1. doing same setup as you(but 27C – AC pointing not directly) and added that nitori bed sheet (N Cool the most “coolest” for the bed and pillows) and actually works compared with the just normal bed sheets that become warm.

  2. Might not be directly from the air-con. There are a lot of summer colds going around right now, especially if you are around kids.

  3. I sleep right under the aircon, I never had a problem with sore throat or stuffed nose after I gave it a good cleaning, check your aircon to see if it’s dirty, cleaning it made a big difference both in more efficient cooling and health issues for me

  4. We often do laundry in the evening and hang some of it in the bedroom. It helps with the humidity.

I do get a sore throat though, so I’ll be looking at other people’s answers too!

  5. Are you perhaps getting allergic reaction? Maybe the inside of your aircon is very dirty and circulates a lot of virus/dust mite/mold etc when it’s turned on, hence the sore throat and stuffed nose.

  6. I must be special cause I never get a sore throat or stuffy nose from the aircon and I’ve slept in a room with one for 30 some years.

  7. I am suffering too. I think it might be pollen particles getting blown through the aircon. I live opposite a park. Don’t know what the solution is

  8. this is Japan, there is literally always something pollinating 365 days a year. I had some reaction to something two nights ago that had the back of my sinuses packed with thick gunk, was basically blocking my breathing and causing me to snorf loudly to clear it all night long at ten minute intervals.

  9. I have aircon and dehumidifier going all day, removing water bin every 3-4 hours. How are you getting dry air?

  10. Are you ADDING humidity to your room during summer?! I don’t even know where to start

  11. We keep our ac clean and if we leave it on all night we wake up with a dry/sore throat too. Put your ac on like a 4 hour timer but then have a fan going on y’all all night. That’s worked for us

  12. If you are breathing through your mouth, you’re probably getting your mouth and therefore throat very dry during the night. 28 is pretty hot in my opinion. My Aircon is set to 23.5. No problems with a sore throat or a stuffed nose

  13. Possibly nothing to do with the air con and just having the house shut up while it’s on. Try a big air filter.

  14. I sleep with my a/c pointed directly at me, never had a sore throat. Might want to clean the a/c filter and check the fans for mold. Personally I clean my a/c filters weekly and fans every season.

  15. I hate aircons… All day at work and have to use it at home this year. Too hot to sleep without it and too dangerous with it on….

  16. I don’t get a sore throat from the A/C, but you might want to buy a thin cotton or silk mask for sleeping if you’re breathing through the mouth. There’s some specifically for use at night that don’t cover the nose.

Also, I’m surprised you’re using a humidifier in summer. I have a dehumidifier running 24/7.

  17. This is what I’ve done and been doing for 熱帯夜.

    1) Changed the AC to high-end one, so we have 快眠 mode which keeps AC unit runs quieter and softer.

    2) High-end Mitsubishi or Panasonic ACs allow users to dismantle the parts like flaps, louvers and panels with less care and time. It takes only a minutes to dismantle them that allows me to clean off the dust from the filter more often than before. So I can keep the inside AC dust-less all the time.

    3) To prevent mold glowing inside AC, we use 送風 every after we turn off the AC.

    4) I have asked technician to install the AC where the air flow is away or far from where we sleep.

    5) We have a room where no AC has installed, we evacuate to that room when we have 熱帯夜 when we need AC running all night. We put the AC in the next room then use the circulator pointing at the ceiling of where we sleep. It keeps our room silent and keep the room right temperature for us.

It cost me 10 extra man yen to do all but QQL has been increased more than expected. Also note that having high-end AC means we don’t need extra dehumidifier, running cost can be lower for those who use dehumidifier during raining season, and humidifier during winter.

  18. Check if your air con has a dry mode, its basically a dehumidifier. That plus a fan blowing on you should help if regular AC bothers you.

  19. The ac is on in the living room, the air has to travel through the kitchen to get to the bedroom. So it’s not so cold anymore and also no direct air in the room.

  20. As others have said , if you’re getting a sore throat or stuffed up nose from an air con being on then it needs to be cleaned.

  21. My air con also makes my throat and eyes dry at night, even if I turn off the actual cooling and dehumidifier and leave it just on the fan

  22. I use those アイスノン big ice pillows, the gel things. Wrap it in a towel so it isn’t too cold on my head, they stay cold for hours and on top of that I just use a standing fan.
They’re intended for when you have a fever but are also used for hot summer nights c:

Edit: I keep it in the freezer until I’m ready for bed.

  23. The ol’ lady and I cleaned three of ours yesterday because she’d be talking about a stuffy nose and throat. A labour of no love, but she was happy with the end results.
