Day Trips Based Out of Hiroshima/Miyajima?

Hi all,

I currently just finished up my second full day in Hiroshima area (staying in hotel on Miyajima). I spent a full day exploring Hiroshima yesterday and the entire day exploring Miyajima today.

While I would love nothing more than to just hang around Miyajima tomorrow, I’m considering a day trip tomorrow. From past posts it seems I can do one of the following:

1. Sandan-kyo (gorge, hike, etc.)
2. Onomichi (couple hours of bike riding on Shimanami Kaido)
3. Saijo Sakagura (sake breweries)

Naoshima Island and Tomonoura seem to be too far.

If anybody has any thoughts on these or other ideas, I’d love to hear them.

  1. I did a day trip to Kumamoto City because I really wanted to go to the Kumamon store, and it was a really nice city with some interesting museums, but it’s closer to 2 hours..

  2. * Okunoshima island has a dark history but is now populated with bunnies.
    * Kure port was where Yamato was built, and has a Yamato museum.
    * Kindaikyo bridge in Iwakuni.
    * Further away, Korakuen and Kurashiki near Okayama.

  3. Iwakuni (Kintaikyo Bridge, castle, White Snake Museum) is probably the most sensible target if you are staying on Miyajima.

  4. Naoshima seems far but we stayed a night there and it was great. There’s an awesome little pizza shop there run by an expat near the marina.

  5. Onomichi is lovely – I only went there to cycle but I regret not looking around the city itself more. I went to Kure and wasn’t that bothered by it, probably more interesting if you’ve got an interest in Japanese maritime history.
