Weekly Praise Thread – 21 July 2023

It’s that time of the week again. Please boast and share about the good things that have happened to you this past week!

  1. 君たちはどう生きるか?

It’s been over 20 years since Spirited Away, and Ghibli finally released a pretty great film again after that string of bad/decent/sorta good-ish at best movies. If it’s Miyazaki’s last film, it’s a much better way to go out than the already forgotten The Wind Rises.

  2. It’s tomato season and I (re)discovered my love for tomato sandwiches. Lettuce, optional, and bacon not required – it overpowers the tomatoes. Just sliced tomato, salt, pepper, and mayo. Breakfast and/or lunch and so many varieties to try.

  3. The bad news: Yesterday I dropped my phone in the toilet and after a traumatic, very stinky experience it did not revive.

The good news: The phone was kind of old and getting a little long in the tooth anyway so I didn’t feel awful about having to get a new one. I went and got a Pixel 7a and am loving it so far! It feels like a big upgrade from my previous phone.

My only complaint is the lack of a headphone jack, but I think that’s a decent trade off for the camera quality, price, etc.

Oh and most importantly, it’s (mostly, I think?) water resistant so hopefully it will survive in the event of another unplanned toilet bath.

  4. Weight loss is going pretty well. Counting calories vs just trying to watch what I eat was a game changer. Hit my target of 79kg but I think I’m going for 75 at least.
There’s talk of going to the beach and while I look ok in clothes I’m not taking my shirt off around a bunch of ripped 22 year olds with 8% body fat.

  5. Outside temperature yesterday was 32. I was quite comfortable in my apartment with just a fan on.

God I’m gonna miss Shiga when I move next year.

also as a weeb, I’m absolutely LOVING moving to Japan in what seems to be an anime/otaku movie Renaissance. I would be so annoyed if I were overseas and had to wait for them to come there, if they did at all. (although they have been coming out much more smoothly lately. IIRC JJK:0 and the Shin tokusatsu series came out in the West only a couple months after they did in Japan. That’s pretty incredible)

EDIT: not Japan related, but I JUST got notification I got accepted to a conference back in the US! This fulfills my publication requirements for my Ph.D and I can now work on my dissertation. Should get there just in time for our family reunion.

So many good things right now
