A question about my permanent residency application (and what to do about an initial delayed work visa at my first job)?

My first job was at a small eikaiwa out in the countryside (which I got through a connection while living in another country). I started the position in April, but my employer was having difficulty (or at least taking a long time) getting my actual work visa. It ended up taking them around 4 months to get it.

So I’m wondering what I might put down regarding my living/work history in Japan? With previous work visa applications, I recorded the actual time when I started work (and not the time when I received my first work visa) and with no consequences/inquiries.

It’s worth noting that this was way back in 2013, so perhaps they will not look back that far. I’m leaning towards recording my start time based on when I received my first work visa (though I’m a tad hesitant, as in previous work visa applications I recorded starting in April – when I suppose I was technically ‘working under the table’.)

As you might have guessed, I will be applying for PR based on the 10 year rule.

Maybe a tricky one to answer, but thanks in advance.

  1. Put down the date you got your visa. Nothing is worse than being caught for illegally working

  2. Not tricky at all. You started living here when you got your visa. Before that you were on holiday.

You would be an idiot to claim to try to claim the time you were an illegal immigrant as part of your 10 years.

  3. Is that time you didn’t have a visa a part of those ten years? If so, don’t be an idiot you will get deported, wait 6 months.
