Was trying to save money with just a fan, but it’s not happening. I keep it around 23-25, higher at night, but I’m worried about my energy bill.
I live in a small leopalace, fairly new (the kitchen/hallway is always noticeably hotter than the bedroom where the unit is, so I assume decent insulation). My montly electricity for the past few months was about 3,700 yen, what can I expect over the summer? I’ve heard of bills as high as 40,000 yen and that would be a problem…

How many square meters are we talking? How often are you home using it?
40,000 is unlikely but you might hit half that if you’re running it 24/7.
I was running and old air conditioner and did the math with the watts written on the label, and it would approximately come to 20,000 per month if the air conditioner was running 24/7. It was about 30 yen per hour. Newer ones are more cost efficient. If you set the fan to low power and the temperature to a reasonable setting it shouldn’t break the bank. It also consumes more energy to start and stop frequently since it has to power up the external fan, so the plan of running it for 20 minutes every hour actually costs you more.
Yeah. I am myself waiting for a big ass electricity bill since my gf is always home and the AC is ON 24h.
you might wanna check the website of the electric power company in your place. by registering my household on their site i can check from time to time how much my bill is and they even have a month-long forecast of how your bill is going to be based on your hourly and daily consumption and the temperature.
It all depends on the efficiency of your air conditioner and the insulation. I have three newish Daikin air conditioners in a 3LDK with at least one on 24/7 pretty much. Our bill was about ¥12,000. I believe there are some discounts or subsidies now? I don’t really pay attention. I think the maximum we ever had, not this year, was around ¥20,000
Try running it in ドライ mode. That saves a lot. That’s what I’ve been doing currently.
I recommend getting a watt meter! I often hear that running the AC in “dry” mode saves more electricity, but at least for me/the model of my AC, it’s actually slightly more expensive. I set the temperature to 28°C, which is tolerable enough for me, especially if supplemented with a fan. When it reaches that temperature, it runs in a low-power mode until it gets warmer again. Using the dry mode pulls a slightly higher wattage and also doesn’t go into the low-power mode, so it uses more electricity all around. Not sure how it would be if I set the temperature lower like 23-25, but that’s where having a watt meter is helpful.
Btw I also live in a small 1K Leopalace and according to my watt meter, it should cost me an extra 3000 yen to run my AC nearly 24/7 this month, so not too bad.
If your provider is TEPCO, I highly recommend registering a くらしTEPCO account, if you haven’t already:

It’ll help you keep abreast of all your usage patterns.

Please excuse my not-so-related question about AC
I just moved into a new place, and my AC (Hisense, Chinese company) acts a bit weird.
While turning it on for cooling, the relative humidity keeps rising, sometimes up to almost 80%, while the temperature is not that cold (around 27-28 C).
Additionally, when it blows out the warm air due to the work cycle or the temperature is reached, the air has VERY bad smell, and the relative humidity will rapidly increase during that time.
The 管理会社 said this AC was cleaned just before I moved in about 2 months ago, and it’s a very new model (2021) too.
What should I do?
WTF how could you have survived without AC up to now ? You’re playing with fire, this is straight up dangerous
i live in an 80s src mansion, 1ldk, about 35sq meter. put insulation strips around my front door, reflective film on balcony doors, net shade, and light blocking curtains. running ac dehumidifier mode on low around 25.5-26.5 since middle of may or so, have a pet so have to keep temp. room stays about 25 and 55% humidity. i’m tokyo gas for gas and electric. june’s combo bill is just over 4000. my highest bill since living here was around 7000 in feb. the gas cost is more expensive than electricity
Eat out less often or save money elsewhere, even if the bill is like 20k per month, it’s still worth it. You are probably saving on gas too, so it should help balance things out.
Like, you are coming back to your safe place, it should at least be comfortable.
If you have the ability to check your bill online, it’s helpful to know what are you doing to keep things comfortable without spending too much. Some ac units/apartment’s location and insulation will work best with dry/cold. Your ac might be more expensive with one or the other too.
But whatever you do, don’t suffer just to save a couple thousand yen, life it’s too short.
Assuming you have access to your electric meter and your electric bill you should be able to self-monitor it with a calculator. You cost per kwh should be on your bill and you can watch your electric meter and take deltas everyday and see how much you’re consuming.
If you almost could keep going on just a fan, cranking it to 23ºC sounds overkill to me. Especially if you want to keep it on a budget.
A Leopalace should still be better insulated than an old AF house (thermically speaking), so I would guess 27 or even 28 could be enough.
Isn’t electricity covered in Leo palace’s rent? At least it was in my shitty first (overpriced) apartment. Either way in that small a space you could run it at 20 degrees 24/7 and would barely break 10k I bet.
