Cost of switching jobs

I’m currently working for a Japanese company and have a 5 year Engineering visa. I recently got an offer from an overseas company without any Japan entity doing remote work (also engineering related)
I was thinking of using one of the Employer of Record to employ me so that I don’t have to give up on my visa and I can remain in Japan and don’t have to relocate. I’m wondering if anyone has done something similar and is it worth it (in terms of having to pay the eor + employer taxes) and what are the potential drawbacks of doing so?

  1. Your employer would have to agree to use the EOR service as your employer has to pay them, and then the EOR pays you. Your employer may not be willing to do this.

If you’re covering the costs it means you will have to pay both halves of your shakai hokken payment, and whatever the employer contribution is for pension. Basically you double those costs.

The EOR company will charge a setup fee and a monthly fee. You’ll need to reach out to a few to find out what those fees are in Japan.
