Off days in Tokyo placement

I wanted to know how many days JETs in Tokyo had off during the year, do we get a winter break? Wanting to know when I would be able (if I’m able) to plan trips or explore other parts of Japan.

  1. Lol you’re in for a treat and a surprise. (Some) Tokyo jets only work 16 days per month, leaving you with ample time off.

  2. ESID, this is highly dependent on your BOE/CO.
In my case as a private school JET, I get about 10 days for winter and spring break without needing to use nenkyu.
Summer break is the longest and if I have any remaining nenkyu, I take it and usually have half of July off and August, since term starts in September. I don’t have to take any nenkyu for it either as well, it’s more of a return to school on this date.
I will have 14 days of nenkyu when it refreshes in August, but I’ll be using it immediately mid-September for my cousins wedding with 2.5 days left for my last year.
Time in lieu is granted if I have to work on Saturdays, but that can be used anytime in the school year.

  3. I know some Tokyo JETs that don’t have to go to work at all if students aren’t there (so the entire winter and summer vacations). I had to go in and desk warm though. Best to ask your predecessor or school

  4. A big factor in this is if you’re a public or private school JET I believe? That might help you narrow down the answers most relevant to you.
