How much does HIV testing cost?

  1. A couple of thousand for the standard test (valid after 3 months from possible infection) This is totally googlable as it is not covered by health insurance. Any doctor can do this test but there are also specialist sexual health clinics.

  2. “The Shinjuku Public Health Center performs STD and HIV tests twice a month on Thursdays from 1:30 pm to 3 pm. The tests are free, 100% confidential, and English speaking nurses would be available.”

What an… unfriendly time of day to have that, but if you need it, there it is.

  3. If it’s a just in case thing, you can do it at a regular 泌尿器clinic without any symptoms for about 3000 yen. The HIV test won’t be covered by insurance but that’s the price. You can get tested for gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia at the same time for a very small amount (less than 1000 yen) because those are covered by insurance. These clinics are usually walk-in only and don’t require appointments.

  4. You can do the free one as u/Barabaragaki suggests, it’s legit advice. If you can’t do those days though you can go to this STD clinic in Shinjuku but prices range from 9,000 to 18,000 JPY:

Pick the test based on how long ago you thing you might have been infected.

  5. Can you get the person you might have contracted it from to go get tested together? HIV takes time to build up to a detectable viral load. It might take 12 weeks to be detectable. If the person you’re worried about getting it from tested negative you could have peace of mind earlier.

  6. It can cost you (and other people) your life if you don’t get it done when you have a suspicion you may need it.

  7. The Shinjuku clinic is good, but used to come with free unsolicited ‘god botherer’ advice to wear condoms, judgmental faces, and there is the fact that you didn’t get given your test result paper to take with you and you couldn’t take a picture of it. At least that is the way it was before the pandemic.

  8. This will sound random but on the off chance someone searches Reddit why not:

If you have dermatitis of any kind, Japanese National health insurance covers HIV testing for free.

Edit: when done at a dermatology clinic.

  9. If you want to do it on a whim? Free but hard to get. If you want availability, records, a printout of your results: its better to go to a clinic and do a paid test. They have price ranges in the clinics websites, usually.
