Hi,
I’ve moved to Japan recently, here on Working holiday visa, and I can’t figure out how to make payment for this months’ rent. I’ve seen some article saying that you can use cash for furikomi in SMBC ATM but it only shows info about entering cash card, and when I’d do so, it then declines it as it’s an Europe issued card. I’ve already tried all ATMs that I could find.
Is is still an option to make furikomi using cash? If not, is there any way for me to make this payment without creating a bank account?

You may also want to try asking in /r/Kyoto.

You can just go to any branch of the bank you want to deposit the rent into with the account details and tell them you want to make a cash deposit, fill in the forms, and done.
Ah, the magical world of subreddits within subreddits! Thanks!
現金振込 (cash transfer, as opposed to from your account) is not available at all ATMs. For SMBC, it’s only from ATMs in bank branches (not stand-alone machines in supermarkets etc.), and it has to be between 8:45-18:00.
just fyi, I dont know if this applys to all banks but atms often dont show all the options when you choose to view it in english. ie. you choose english and bank transfer might not be an option.
make sure youre using the atm in japanese to make sure you have all options available
On the ATM, furikomi is usually missing in the English menu. In English, you probably only get the menu options of Withdraw, Deposit, and update passport book. You have to select Japanese when doing furikomi.
Wish you luck but prepare 1. to try several times in different counters / 2. for reject & check with your landlord if cash payment ok
My experience:
WH Visa holder in Fukuoka, have a Japan Post Bank account, by the time with less than 2 months stay record.
My bank account is subjected to 7500 yen handling charge for bank transfer (i.e. foreigner but not yet have a job). Bank lady was so kind & suggested me head to the SMBC just right next door (i.e. the branch my landlord actually opened the account) for cash deposit with cheaper charge (few hundred yen only).
The SMBC receptionist was nice & guided me to the counter, yet the counter lady rejected me as my 在留卡 stated I stay not long enough to use the service (> 6 months).
