Lot more questions than answers….like , could they swim and is the river historically dangerous. Tragedy.

So sad, I can’t imagine what the parents are going through.
This is really hard news to read. I think Japanese schools need deep ends in their pools. Too many pools are constructed with safety in mind, but they remove the necessity to learn to swim for survival.
With shallow pools, not only do Japanese people fail to learn to swim confidently, but they also end up with zero experience of being forced to swim in deep water. This, I believe, might be one reason why we see people drowning in rivers every summer. They panic in deep water because they have never experienced it.
