Luggage to Japan

I was wondering if anyone knew the cost of shipping luggage to the hotel for orientation? I would like to bring two checked bags with me to cut down on things I need to have mailed from the US or bought as I’m only staying for one year. Wanted to check if anyone knew the cost or the process.

  1. Depends on the airline. But whoever is your travel agency for your embassy would be able to answer this definitively.

For at least NY embassy we get 2 free checked bags and a carryon and personal item (like a bag/backpack/etc). Anything over that you pay for yourself, as well as anything over the airlines weight limit on the checked bags.

  2. From the airport in Japan upon arrival you can ship one bag to your placement. One big luggage can go with you to the hotel.

  3. You would ship it to your placement, not the hotel!

Last year, on the last day of orientation, they had a block of time for anyone who had any luggage they wanted to ship. They had staff there with slips and all you needed to do was write your address or the address of the BOE that you’ll be working under if you’re not sure of your address yet.

If I remember correctly, I shipped my big luggage that was about 68lbs and it cost about ï¿¥7,400. That’s the shipping price from Tokyo to Shiga Prefecture. So honestly, fairly cheap!

Hopefully the process is the same, but if you have any questions, you can probably message CLAIR for more answers!

  4. When I arrived (pre covid) they took our large checked bags at the airport and it was sent directly to our apartment. We were told to keep our personal bag and the bag we packed to use while at orientation in Tokyo. I believe the same system will apply this year. Pack your carryon with the items you will use while in Tokyo and send the checked bags to your apartment. The JET staff handles everything so they will direct you.
