My parents are visiting Japan in September and are wondering if it’s possible to add them to my credit card for convenience while they’re traveling here since having a local card will be better than using a foreign credit card (they’d pay me back at the end). Has anyone done anything like this before or have alternative recommendations for how they can spend money while they’re here without wasting a bunch on credit card exchange fees or carrying loads of cash?

There’s a thing called a family card which is basically a copy of a credit card in a family members name that charges to the same account. But I’m afraid that proof of residency might be required to make a card like that. You should look into it.
Wise or Revolut in your home country?
Or you can get them a reloadable prepaid card or an IC card they can pay for stuff with.

It’s not. The only places foreign cards tend to not work are online or when setting up auto-payments on contracts. Your parents will likely only be needing POS transactions with card in-hand, so they are unlikely to have any problems.
You can just give them your card if you have more than one. At least that’s what I usually do. It’s not like anyone gonna check that the name matches.
