JP Post / USPS

I sent 2 packages to America on the same day and to the same address. The tracking information for both packages matched up until it was being delivered. Only one package was delivered, the other was “returned to sender”. I called USPS to inquire about what had happened, they said the address was wrong but I knew that was not correct. I verified the address with them and also explained a second package was sent with no problems to that address. USPS basically said the package was already returned and there was nothing they could do, even if it was a mistake on their end. They suggested I contact Japan Post to request a refund of the shipping fees.

The package was returned on July 15 so I waited a while for it to arrive but so far it has not. I went to post office to talk about this, they didn’t know where my package was and suggested I wait up to 2 more weeks. When I asked for my money back they looked shocked I even asked and said that because the package arrived in the USA, they are not liable so there was nothing they could do.

As you can imagine, the shipping fee was very high so I want to recover it since I didn’t do anything wrong in this situation. However, I am at a loss as to what to do because no one wants to help.

Has any of you been in a similar situation? What did you do?

TIA

  1. Japan post will only refund you if the package was lost. They won’t even refund you if you sent for example batteries without declaring and box got turned back in Japan, so don’t expect a refund on “wrong address” even tho it wasn’t.

FWIW, USPS is pretty much fucked these days. Just watched a package (EMS, USPS Priority Mail Express International) spend 20 days going from west to east coast.

  2. You can put in an official postal inquiry which will compel them to answer and possibly provide a refund. EMS has its own special form. If you used airmail, then I believe it’s a CN08. You can ask for a form at the post office.

  3. We’ve had this happen. Never thought to ask for a refund, though, because we are pretty sure none was coming in any event. As said, USPS is pretty messed up now and not all that reliable like Japan Post.
