Sumidagawa Hananbi

I wanna go to the Sumidagawa Hanabi at the 29th. I’m from Hachioji which is ~50 minutes train ride from Shinjuku station. I have part time job that starts at 2AM the next day and I’m worried I won’t make it back. ppl say Sumidagawa Hanabi is so crowded that it’d cause so much traffic at the train station in the route. I want to know the opinions of the ppl who went there previous years. Can I make it back or should I just go to the local one?

  1. Where in the Sumida area will be watching from? You don’t have to actually be in Asakusa to watch them. You can be quite a distance away and still enjoy them all.

Will you be there strictly for the fireworks? Or will you partake in the local festivities, eat, drink, etc. The fireworks are due to end by 8:30pm.

You should have no problems getting back to JR Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station in time to catch the train back to Hachioji.

  2. The Hachioji show is on the same day. If you don’t have a ticket or some way of getting a good spot for Sumida, it’s really not worth going to.

  3. if youre watching from a few stations away then it should be ok. if youre going right up to it then itll probably take you a few hours just to get out. If you do end up in a very crowded area Id probably suggest leaving maybe 10 minutes before it actually ends

  4. On that same day, you have the Hachioji fireworks festival right on your doorstep.

Or even better, you have the Tachikawa fireworks festival. There is plenty of room to put a sheet on the grass and enjoy the show there.

  5. FWIW, the news last night spent 10 minutes or so talking about the congestion at the Adachi-ku fireworks (on the Arakawa shore at Kita-Senju) on 7/22, since it was the first time post-covid.

I’ve attended both in the past, and that show (while crowded) has always seemed much less of a hassle to get to/from than the Sumidagawa show.
