How difficult is it to move between cities with fairly minimal luggage?

I’m planning to live in Tokyo for 3 months from February and just wanted to see how difficult it is to move between cities every 2-3 months to see more of the country.
Would flying domestically be my only “good” choice in this regard? I’ve taken the Shinkansen with a medium suitcases before and thought it was a pretty annoying experience with luggage with getting in and out of stations.

  2. Ship your luggage with Yamato and just bring a day bag with you.

Don’t forget with flying you still have to get your stuff to/from the airport, so it’s not really less of a hassle than Shinkansen.

Some routes are better for flying, some are better for train. You’ll have to take it case by case.

  3. You can ship luggage and boxes relatively cheaply using Yamato or Sagawa.

The bigger problem, or just pain is that you would have to update all of your documents every time you move. This will take a full day, maybe a little more depending on the cities you are moving between. There can be quite a lot of stuff to update each time.
