Last few items, what can I do with them?

Leaving my house on Sunday, going back to the UK.

I still have a foldable bed (that turns into a little couch or Sofa), an ironing board and a vacuum that I can’t seem to get rid of.

In England I’d just donate it to a charity shop or something but that doesn’t seem to be the case here.

Any recommendations?

Edit: I’m in Hiroshima.

  1. Facebook marketplace – check your local one. there are always people who take free stuff!

  2. Put online for free to whoever picks up.

Your other option is sodai gomi, but you need to buy stickers and arrange for pickup.

  3. It will be a bit pricy on short notice, but any local 不用品回収 places will take almost anything.

We looked into this when we were preparing to move, and the benefit really came down to the convenience. We had an old trash can, ironing board, and folding chair that each cost a few hundred to throw out as sodai gomi, but we had to make the pickup reservation weeks in advance.

The 不用品回収 places basically wanted a few thousand on top of any other fees for convenience, but they told us they could be there within a few hours notice.

For cheaper options, you might get lucky if you list them on Facebook now and have someone who can come in the next few days.

  4. Is your Japanese good enough to use ジモティー? Because that’s the fastest way to get rid of stuff, especially stuff that requires a car for pickup. List it for free.

  5. There’s services you can pay to come take all your junk from you. They will frame it like they’re going to come and pay you for your stuff, but the only stuff they will pay money for is basically just electronics like TVs, washing machines etc. Everything else you will have to pay them to take. That’s what I did when I had to leave Tokyo. They showed up, and in about half an hour they cleared out the entire apartment. Cost me about 1.5万. The guy said he was giving me a “special foreigner discount” lol. Pretty sure that just meant I was getting ripped off. I forget what the Japanese term for this type of thing is but if you just google in Japanese about selling your furniture it should come up.

  6. Definitely recommend Jimoty. It’s only in Japanese but if you’re worried I’m sure you can manage with chrome built in translate and google translate

  7. If you want get rid it for free very fast just use the facebook group called: mottainai japan.
Got rid of all my stuff in the sane day I posted there
