Honda E drivers

Hi everyone. Does anyone here have a Honda E? I’m looking for a new car and would prefer electric, or at least a hybrid. I like the look of the E but it’s kind of new. Does anyone have one? How is it? It’s pretty hilly where I live, so that might change your opinions. I’d appreciate any helpful advice. Cheers

  1. Have you checked out the Nissan Sakura or Mitsubishi EK cross EV?

The Honda E is significantly more expensive and depending on your location, with subsidies/cashbacks from the government you can get the price down close to a normal Kei car, though the range is smaller, depends on how much/far you intend to drive.

  2. It’s a really nice little car, but the range is bad for the price. Someone mentioned the Sakura which I think strikes a good balance of cost, performance and functionality if you’re mainly doing local driving. You won’t be driving across the country. I have driven electric cars exclusively for the last 5 years, a Leaf ePlus and an I-Miev for a while. Absolutely no problems. Tesla is also a good option if you need range.

Japan still has a pretty poor selection of electric cars, and charging infrastructure is still based on 12 year old assumptions.

  3. It’s a shame the Honda E has such a small battery. Bigger battery would have made it a home run. I loved it when I test drove it. But the battery capacity… Sigh. Far too expensive for the range it offers.

I drive a Leaf ePlus (62kWh battery), which can make longer journeys, as well as mountain driving anxiety-free.

The Sakura is fun, although when I test drove it, it really felt like a go-kart, somehow more than when I test drove the iMiev. It’s also not made for long trips. I had the original 24kWh Nissan Leaf (roughly same range as the Sakura), and the range anxiety was very real.

Unfortunately for me my EV days have temporarily come to an end as Wifey damaged the Leaf (no one injured) for the third time in as many years so I’ve decided to go for an easier to drive Kei, and the 20kWh of the Sakura and EK X EV don’t work for my needs. So I’m going for a “fake” hybrid Kei, the Nissan Roox, which these days is basically a mini Serena.

  4. Best bang for the buck will be a Prius with 100k km on the clock. Will easily last another 10 years of 20,000km/year and cost you almost nothing to run it. By that time the charging infrastructure here might be good enough to buy something all electric.

  5. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Still don’t know what to get but will check out the Sakura and I-MIEV. Cheers

  6. the honda E was made as a concept EV city car and I’ve heard so it does not have much range..
apart from the Nissan offerings, perhaps also look at Hyundai Ioniq 5? There are some available in Tokyo to test drive and they are really nice to drive
