Something screeching flew into my window

Something has been screeching and repeatedly flying into my window, quite hard. I was so sure it was a bird because it sounded like one, but when I look outside I see this big boy bug lying on its back, wings open, twitching, seemingly unable to get back up. I am super uncomfortable around bugs but genuinely curious.

What kind of flying bugs here makes loud screeching/high pitch screaming noises and are about the size of a cockroach?

  1. The bugs are attracted to light even from your windows. As soon as I hear them banging on my windows, I just close the curtains and they stop

  2. Literally had the same thing happen to me last week! But mine didn’t screech and it looked like a beetle. Maybe yours was a cicada?

  3. It was a cicada. They’re mostly harmless, except for the noise. It’s safe to pick them up and toss them off your veranda or window ledge. They’re sap feeders, though, and once in a while will mistake your hand for a tree and try to drill into it to get at the sap. (This only happens if you’ve held them for 30 seconds or longer.)

They’re also edible and reasonably palatable. Boil them first and pull off the wings. You can eat them with vinegared rice as *nigirizushi.*

  4. I had a cicada land on the screen of my open window while on a Skype call. Scared the shit out of everybody.

Sounded like the gates of hell had been opened up behind me.

    Those fuckers are loud.

Bad habit of playing dead only to fly at you as you walk by too.

  5. It may look dead but it still has a bit of buzz left in it. I may or may not be talking from experience here, but if you do go outside to kick it off the balcony and be a Steve Irwin-like super hero in front of your wife, close the door behind you first!!! Otherwise it will fly directly into your lounge room where said wife is eating dinner – prompting her to frantically hurdle over the couch and run away, buzz the fuck around causing temporary deafness, test its flight speed buzzing from wall to wall as you chase it with a tupperware container to catch it; and when you finally do catch it, buzz and vibrate so violently as you carry it back outside that you still feel it in your arm as if you have PTSD. The release will be satisfying, your wife will reappear upon confirmation the balcony door is CLOSED with the cicada on the outside, and seeing it all dried out and crunchy on the driveway the next morning will make your week. All hypothetical of course… Good luck with your situation!

  6. Haha yes definitely a cicada!! I used to be scared of them especially because they sometimes fly right into you and are so loud but I learned to love them after a few summers here. Also they only get to live a very short amount of time above the ground after growing underground for years so please be nice to them they won’t hurt you ❤️

  7. Cicadas are ugly as fuck and noisy but harmless. I sometimes grab one from the tree to scare my kids lol
