Bank is asking for my new zairyu card – should I send them my old one with the extension stamp?

My bank SMBC sent me a postcard asking for my new zairyu card. I have already applied for it, but it’s unlikely it will be ready before my old one expires and I will be in the two months extension period.

Do I just wait for the new card, or do I send them the old one with the stamp? I guess the former and they probably have the same grace period of two months, but any experience would be appreciated.

EDIT: Called them. They specifically said they do not want the extension stamp on the card, it does not count. Their grace period is 3 months since they send the postcard and they send the postcard 1 month before the stated expiry date. They also recorded that I called and put it in some case notes.

  1. I’d contact them and explain the situation. Do nothing and there’s a possibility they may freeze your account before the new one arrives.

  2. I’m in the same situation but my bank is MUFG. In the letter they have a deadline for when I need to send my card by and it’s a couple of months after my card expires. There’s nothing like that on your letter?

  3. I sent the old with extension, they write back week later asking for the new one but with new deadline date.

  4. I went through this just a couple of months ago. I sent back a copy of my card with the stamp, and a copy of the paper receipt thing immigration gives you for good measure. That was fine until I got the new card and sent through a copy of that as well. Don’t just ignore it.

  5. Hopefully they give you some time to submit it. Yuucho last year locked my account the day my card expired. It was a pain having to withdraw only 1 or 2 man at a time

  6. Yes. Last year I forgot to extend my zairyou card.
I go back to my perfecture and get it stemp(ed).
And when I back to japan, I give them my old one and then extend my zairyou card
