Foreigner Wanting Remote Work in Home Country (is this possible?)

My spouse and I are both foreigners currently on work visas at the same company in Japan. I am considering working for a company in my home country (remotely) while my spouse stays at the Japanese company full-time.

Should I switch to a dependent visa if I want to leave my current company in Japan? Can I work remotely (or at all) while on a dependent visa?

  1. You can work remotely on a dependant visa but you will be limited to 28h/week.

  2. You cannot work for a foreign company on a work visa.

You can switch to a dependent visa, but you can only work 28 hours per week and you can’t make very much money. If you are not actually financially dependent on your wife, you don’t qualify for a dependent visa.

Next most common question is about taxes. You must pay income & residence tax in Japan for any income you generate from work you perform in Japan. It does not matter if you are paid overseas or if your employer is overseas or if you don’t bring the money back to Japan. You’ll also have to pay for all your own NHI as well as pension.
