Biking between Shizuoka, Aichi, and Mie

Hi all,

I’ll be in Japan for a couple of months starting in September and would like to do some biking while I’m there.

I’m staying in Hamamatsu (near train station) and want to try to bike from Hamamatsu to the Ise Jingu in Mie.

**Option 1**: Bike from Hamamatsu down the Atsumi Peninsula, then take a ferry directly to Toba and bike to the shrine. Probably around 75ish miles, and most likely able to do it in a day.

**Option 2**: Bike around Mikawa Bay, through Nagoya, down Ise Bay, all the way to the shrine. Probably closer to 125 miles, seems a lot more epic, probably requires 2 days of biking.

Has anyone done anything similar? Since I’ll be on the road, I suppose it would be more of a sight-seeing experience instead of spending a lot of time in one given place.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Not biking but did the same with motorcycle. Do Option 1, going thru Nagoya won’t be fun while the peninsula (if it can be called so) where Tahara is located is extremely beautiful.

  2. I have done Option 1 pretty much exactly a few years ago. I started on route 1, then switched to 42. Took the ferry in Irago to Toba and stayed in Ise. Mostly flat but can get some strong winds coming off the water. Was an absolutely beautiful route along the coast! Let me know if you have any questions.

  3. Not sure what is more “epic” about going via Nagoya, but for sure I would expect more car and more city. Option 1 seems to be more interesting to cycle, like a bit more in the countryside and after the ferry, potentially a part in the mountain/forest.

If you take the sightseeing approach, you could always see if there is attractions you want to stop by, you might have a bit more options on the Nagoya route if that is the case.
