Weekend Stupid Questions Thread – 06 August 2022

As per usual, feel free to ask any silly stupid questions or not so silly stupid questions that you haven’t had a chance to ask here. Be kind to those that do and try to answer without downvoting. Please keep criticism and snide remarks out of the thread.

  1. Anyone know what’s the cultural importance of going to a shrine before getting into a relationship? A bit of context, so I’ve been chatting up a local and she’s very insistent before we proceed to become anything serious, we must visit a shrine. I realize I ain’t in Kansas no more lol, and as a Weeb obviously I love visiting shrines, but I think this means something more for her than just a regular touristy visit for me? I asked her about it and she just laughed but became serious and said we must visit a shrine first lol.

  2. tl;dr did they update something with the EX app that broke stuff? I haven’t heard anything about it but I and some of my coworkers had trouble.

On Wednesday I tried buying shinkansen tickets for a work trip with the app, but at payment time, it told me my credit card (with the card I had registered to my account and I have used before) did not authorize payment, and I should contact my credit card company. I was like, LOL no I am not doing that, I’ll just take my chances and buy tickets at a machine at the station on the day (which I was able to do …with my credit card.) I had also tried again on the EX website in a browser and got the same error.

I was prepared to chalk this up as a “me problem” and not give it any more thought, but after our work trip yesterday, some of my coworkers were telling me about how they *were* able to buy tickets on the app, but then they didn’t actually receive the QR codes for the tickets until like 20min after their reserved train. We have all bought shinkansen tickets using the EX app before without problems.

Anyway it seemed like a weird coincidence, maybe it was just a synchronized bout of bad luck, but then I also saw some shinkansen ticket buying trouble over on the complaints thread so I was just wondering if anyone knows whether something is up.

  3. Does anyone know where I can get my eyebrows shaped in Yokohama area? Preferably somewhere where they can speak a bit of English.

  4. Partial rant, partial stupid question.

Is moving appointments without telling people a thing or am I just running into rude people? Three times since I moved co-workers have set afterhours events and I’ve planned to go, one time it was cancelled and the woman told no one until a few minutes before (Sorry but we can’t do it tonight kind of thing.) Everyone else seemed not bothered by it. Yesterday I was in meetings up until 15 minutes before the event, enough time to pack up and walk to the bar. I come back from my meeting tona text message: Please come at 17:30, we’ve moved the meeting. Sent at 17:20. (Original meeting 18:00).

My custom is that you warn people of that kind of thing hours in advance because people make plans around things. Is that not a thing here?

  5. Why does PayPay let me add my credit card, but never offer it as a payment option? I seriously don’t get how PayPay works, since I’ve only used it to pay some utility bills, having to top up out my bank account.

  6. I might get a chance to have a month off at some point before the end of the year. I would like to use that month to take a Japanese course that is fairly intensive (daily classes morning or afternoons). I am around N2 but would like to improve so that I can take on more responsibility at work.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a school in Tokyo/Yokohama that can offer that kind of structure?

Cost does not matter as long as the quality is there.

  7. Am I crazy or is using multiple question marks like this?? a Japanese thing

It kind of throws me off sometimes when I’m on a professional email chain and then they’ll ask me a question like this???

I asked one of my Japanese co-workers about this once and she said it’s to try to seem “more casual and friendly”, but to me it sounds super anxious and demanding.

  8. Why are domestic flights to Okinawa so expensive? Depending on the timing I’ve found flights from Osaka to neighboring countries like Thailand, Philippines etc. cheaper than flying domestically to Okinawa.
