Living in Shinjuku for a year or more

Hi guys,
I am moving to Tokyo in a few months and had some concerns about where I may be living. I am going to be living in the middle of Shinjuku right near shinjuku park. Specifically near Shinjuku gyoenmae station, I will be on the 9th floor in an old building that was built in 1965 but has been renovated for “earthquake resistance” in 2021 but I don’t know how much I trust that renovation/reconstruction. Do you think I should be concerned about living here particularly for the earthquakes and do you think the area will be really loud in the night and would disturb my sleep? I am a light sleeper and will be waking up around 7-8am every morning.

  2. First of all, Shinjuku park and Shinjuku Gyoen are two different parks located in the opposite sides of Shinjuku.

Second, Gyoenmae is a great area with good accessibility, park nearby and it’s not that noisy in the night.

Old buildings are a little concerning when it comes to their stability, but then we haven’t seen them crumbling that much even in 3/11, so maybe you will be fine.

    I would take that offer.

  3. Compare the rent vs the average rent in the area. Living experience is correlated to how much you pay every month.

  4. I wouldn’t worry about earthquakes if the building has been renovated and you are only here for a few months. Buying would be a different story of course. We had no building collapses in Tokyo even on 311, remember
