Can I use past tense when asking about someone’s birthday?

I was taught to ask ‘何年生まれですか’. Why not ask ‘何年生まれでしたか’ since you were born in the past?

  1. It’s like asking “What’s your year of birth” vs “What was your year of birth”. It hasn’t changed, so it’s weird to use past tense. Note that 生まれ is a noun, if you used the verb 生まれる then it would be okay to say 何年生まれましたか
