I recently bought a futon before going on holiday for a month, while i was away the futon was leaned up against the wall.
Upon returning the futon stunk bad and made me have mould like symptoms when being around it
It is possible that the futon got mould on it when no one even slept on it when i was away?

Yes. Go buy a new one
I don’t know why you would buying something knowing you’re going on a month vacation and not receive it before going. Japanese summers plate hot and humid, you keep it boxed for a month ya it would probably mold
Also, you can get mold-absorbent pads that go under the futon
I would probably have a dehumidifier on while away and I know Japanese would keep the AC on if they think they’ll be away for an extended period.
